Supporting Community, Empowering Individuals, Growing Involvement
Jubilee’s Resident Leadership initiative works to evoke and build upon the talents, gifts, and skills of Jubilee Housing’s resident community. With the goal of creating robust programming, enthusiastic involvement and long term participation, residents are encouraged to identify needs and opportunities around them and to take initiative to create change. Meaningful programming begins with, and is sustained by, residents themselves. Leadership opportunities are found across all areas of JH programming, creating space for residents to develop skills applicable to all areas of life.
Program Goals:
- Support community building leadership that strengthens networks of neighbors in each of Jubilee’s seven residential buildings.
- Empower residents to participate in shaping community decisions.
- Encourage JH community to be active and engaged citizens within the Adams Morgan neighborhood, and the broader city of Washington D.C.
- Equip participants with leadership skills through skill building and personal discovery.
Past and Current Resident Leadership Initiatives include:
- Eight residents currently sit on Jubilee Housing’s board of directors.
- Residents successfully testified in front of the Washington DC city council to advocate funding for affordable housing issues.
- Resident leaders provided voice and input for the design of the children’s’ playground built behind Jubilee Housings Fuller building.
- Resident Council members developed “Welcome Back Buckets,” filled with assorted cleaning supplies, distributed to each household moving into newly remodeled apartments.
